You'll need a credit card

Because tourists receive treatment and routinely leave the country without paying there bill, most hospitals will not provide treatment withough some form of payment—you'll want to keep a credit card on you for emergencies.

Travel insurance

Travel Guard Trip Insurance We DO NOT travel to Mexico without travel insurance. The finest in medical care is expensive, and your policy may not reimburse you for everything. We purchase the emergency evacuation waiver that will get us home if something disasterous were to happen.

Ambulance service

This area we consider a major flaw in Cancun's emergency medical services. Ambulance services are not trained to the level that you will find in the United States, Canada, and Europe. Many ambulances are operated by a small hopital; if they pick you up at an accident scene, you may not get the best care. If one of us suffered an injury that wasn't life-threatening, we would not get in any ambulance other than the Red Cross, and then would request to be taken either to Hospiten or Galenia hospital.

Pre-existing conditions

Tourists traveling with a known medical condition may want to stay in Cancun or Playa del Carmen where you are closest to modern medical facilities. On the island of Cozumel you will be near a good medical facility, but not as ultra-modern as our first two choices. In areas such as Tulum, Akumal, and Tankah, you will be farther from excellent facilities. Definitely purchase trip insurance.

Medical facilties

In our opinion, the two most modern facilities for emergency attention are Galenia and Hospiten.
